- To out do my previous last place and DNF finishes.
- Because my daughter thinks I am a superhero
- To show that with a little work the average IT guy can do it
- Because I joined the EM:PWR cycling team
- Because I beat cancer in 2006
- Because Crosscrusade looks fun.
- For the frites.

The Felt Breed in full race mode in Forest Park.
The changes I made to this bike really worked well and now it feels like my Kona JTS. Ready for CrossCrusade #1, I just need to get this lung-respiratory thing to go away by next week. Hacking up yellow, so I think it is on the outs.
I focus’d on the Breed rebuild last night as this bike will be the one that I go to Alpenrose with. There were certain things that always bothered me about this bike. For some reason it never felt like my previous Kona Jake, even though the frame geometry was pretty much exactly the same. I mean the two bikes were probably made in the same factory on the same jig the same. The difference was paint, company, and components. My original Jake from 2005 was geared with a mix of Sora/Tiagra and obviously the Breed is a singlespeed. I think over the last couple days I figured it out.
The Breed’s steer tube was cut about two inches shorter than the Jake. Throwing my weight more forward and feeling way different than the original Jake. I found this by putting my current Kona next to the Felt and boom it stuck out like a sore thumb. So since the Jake is out of commission until I do some major maintenance I figured I’d swap forks and see what happens.
Overall I swapped out the Fork, carbon seat tube, seat, brakes, and pedals. I added back in the CX in-line brake levers for more control and added barrel adjusters. Some Cat4Pro’s may laugh at them, but whatever, I am a mountain biker at heart. I also threw on a new set of tires that have been waiting for this CX season.
Overall I am really satisfied with the way the build turned out and the bike seems to fit better and as a double bonus it is lighter. I am a little worried about racing on a single speed, but that is the reason I bought this bike in the first place.
I can’t wait to get it dirty.

em:pwr cycling sticker for this year’s team.
words to live by
This sticker reminds me of my daughter and will push me when I am bonking. Thanks Dirt Rag for sending them.
Trying out the crosswolf on front. I bought these at a bike swap for $15.
Larsen MiMo remind me of a Kenda Small Block Eight, but hopefully better.
Looks like I will be racing on the singlespeed for crosscrusade

After talking with the wife and figuring out bike repair costing plans, it looks like the Felt Breed will be the chosen bike for my CrossCrusade adventure this year. I will be racing in the beginner cat for the first race at Alpenrose. Then make game time decisions for Hillsboro and PIR as to whether I bump to the Old men Cat 4s or the drunken crazies in the SS Cat.
The reason for most of this is that in the year that I have owned the Jake, I have ridden it too much and wore out too many parts to get it ready by race day October 2nd. The Breed barely ever gets used since it is bike #3 in the stable and is basically ready after some quick component change outs for my comfort bits.
Funny thing.
I was thinking about selling that bike, good thing I didn’t. eh?

How you see your self cyclocross racing.
and
What you actually look like.

get ready….
I lost the photog’s site for the first pic. If you know DM me and I will link here.
Thanks nickgaetano for the last photo. It is awesome!
The Jake is getting ready for CX.
I took off the road slicks, tossed the speed kings back on. Took off the commuter things like lights, etc. I put my carbon seatpost and narrow seat on to replace the stock setup. I found that I like the narrow seat a bit better than the stock WTB saddle.
Next up, brake pads, replacement cleats for the Time ATACs, and hopefully a new wheelset.
I like this bike.
No effing around.
Look at that old rockshox mag21(?) with a road brake mounted(?)
Or is that a quad21? Either way it is a interesting setup for cyclocross.
