Pedal powered farms and factories: the forgotten future of the stationary bicycle via Energy Bulletin

This is a good article, a fun read in a mechanical sort of way.

It talks about the potential of human powered machines in everyday use.  I think about these things as I mow my lawn with my push mower with no gas or electricity.  Just me.

One of the many links in the article posted was to http://www.mayapedal.org which I thought was a good link to highlight the variety of human powered machines or Bicimáquinas as they call them.

Tall Bike with FIRE

Tall Bike + Fire = Awesome

If we boost the research on pedal powered technology - trying to make up for seven decades of lost opportunities - and steer it in the right direction, pedals and cranks could make an important contribution to running a post-carbon society that maintains many of the comforts of a modern life. The possibilities of pedal power largely exceed the use of the bicycle.

Spring start in Forest Park

Today I snuck away from baby duties to clear the mind and get some dirt riding in. It was dirty and a little wet. The new gearing worked flawlessly and it felt smooth. Last picture sums up my feelings after the ride. Here is the daily mile data

It is good to have spring,

Jeremy

Happy face!

EROICA 2010

Yes it sounds like Erotica and I think of that Madonna song, but this is actually different.

It is a bike fair and ride dedicated to cycling of old. The video is a bit long, but interesting. It also has some great views of Tuscany, and makes me continue to think of going to Italy. One day….

We Won 2nd Place!! Helmet drawing contest

We went on down to the Clever Cycles store party to see if our helmets won the helmet design contest. They were actually giving away two gift cards. There was a children’s helmet design for $100 gift card (2nd place) and an overall design for a $500 gift card (1st place).

We won the best children’s design (2nd place) with Heather’s “Perfect Day”. It was pretty sweet watching Heather go up and win a $100 for a great drawing. ;)

We plan on using the money to get the little one a really really nice bike for this summer. I would like to thank Clever Cycles and Nutcase Helmets for having such a fun contest.

Jeremy

UPDATE: Here is the official word from Clever Cycles. I guess technically it was a second place finish, but I don’t mind. Also, here is the BikePortland update on the contest. Just pumped people liked the drawing.

PS the overall winner 1st place was by a kid who had a awesome snail drawing.

I usually don’t take the train home after work because I hate waiting I just want to ride. The bike afford some head clearing time and a challenge.

On the way home in the afternoon, roses at the Japanese Test Roase Garden. Portland is known for her roses.

Mr. Snake in Commuter Attire

Today I finished up the Kona project and converted the Jake the Snake into my daily commuter. I will be travelling about 10 Miles a day, so the need for a geared tough bike was necessary. I added a rack, fenders, and my old panniers. I have lights and am ready for a test run either Friday or Saturday.

Here’s to cyclocross bikes making awesome commuters!
