Dirty Disco in the sun.
2004.
Something I’ve wanted since two frackin thousand frackin four. A cyclocross bike with disc brakes. Mainly for commuting and my hatred of canti brakes.
Eight years.
Waiting.
Wishing.
Hoping the bike industry would change, I had to wait for a 2010 UCI ruling allowing for them in competition and Tim Johnson to win a USGP race on them to get the rest of the world to notice.
When I bought my first Kona Jake in Boulder (2004) I said “Great bike, does it come with discs?”. The nice sales guy gave me the weirdest look. Something about killing myself with them or something was his response. Kind of like the kid in the Christmas Story “I’ll shoot my eye out.”
Well now I can shoot my eye out thanks to On-One. Today is the day. I now have in my possession an On-One Dirty Disco cyclocross bike with DISC FRACKIN’ BRAKES! Woot!
I’ll have more pictures coming as I take her on the maiden voyage tomorrow. For now here are some bike stand dispatches from the Evil Lair.
Avid BB7 road brakes feel a lot like my BB7 MTB brakes.
My favorite sticker on the bike. “Rigorously tested by angry laboratory robots”
These are my old Conti Speed Kings at 35mm. Rumor has it that the DD can take a 38.
Getting the Kona Jake the Snake ready to sell.
The hardest debate as a bike geek.
I will be getting a new cyclocross bike soon and that leaves the old one sitting in the Evil Lair brooding about not being ridden.
What to do about the old bikes as one gets something newer?
The dilemma is purely a “first world problem” and should not be taken to seriously.
I am really close now to the goal of no more canti brakes. I may just sell all the bikes/frames with cantis and move on to disc-for-everyone idea.
Rambling ideas….
On-One Dirty Disco news
I got fitted a bit today for the Dirty Disco. This bike is going to be so SWEET! The fit is pretty darn close to my Kona thanks to Shiggy’s patent pending measurement system. I am actually even more looking forward to Cross Crusade this season. The project is going smoothly and we are waiting on the brakes and other bits to finish her off. One of the cool things about this frame I think is that I will be able to re-use a set of 29er mountain bike disc wheels as it was designed with them in mind.
On a side note: I may have my 2010 Kona Jake the Snake frameset (56) becoming available soon as the Disco will most likely become my go to work horse bike. Contact me if you are in the market. We could work something out.
Or you could get your own Dirty Disco today for $799.

Retroshift.
While at the bike show this weekend I got to try out the Retroshift. It was pretty slick and honestly I could actually see the benefits of using it. One of the cool techy things is that it mounts to a basic regular drop bar brake lever.
So here is where my monkey brain starts to kick in and think about adding Drop Bars on the Karate Monkey again [MONSTERCROSS!]. I have MTB type Avid BB7’s. They require a long pull lever to work but drop bar shifters (STI) are short pull. So normally you throw the roller things on there and call it good, except it isn’t. I looks ghetto. With the Retroshift one could get the required levers (like the Tektro RL520’s I’ve been eyeing) and mount the shifter on the lever.
Of course, Retroshift has been thinking of this and will hopefully have a version soon for us. All good things to those who wait.
Karate Monkey in the sun. I was not able to get a good pic last night for the record, so this one works better. Last night I took the KM back to a regular rigid single speed for goofing off. I also repurposed the Maddux 29er disc wheelset which will be going on a different bike soon.
29er is just fancy marketing for 700c. The CX tires are Conti Speed Kings. These hoops will hopefully soon be on a really sweet CX bike.
Getting in the right size.
I am in a XL jersey and M bib. The Panache jerseys are really nice and comfy. I can fit into a L jersey, but the XL feels better as i have a longer torso and toothpick legs . This is the same way I ordered the EM:PWR kit last year and it worked out well. The arm warmers are sexy smooth and i really can’t wait to get those. They are WAY better than the ones I have now, and i use them all the time. Did I mention it snowed last night?
Anyway, remember to get your order in before March 31st on the Zendoughnut store:

Also, if you were considering joining to ride and fund raise for some charities contact me. After the pre-order the price will be going up as I move the extras over to store.zendoughnut.com. I think we need to add 4 more Cyclocross events to the calendar here in the Portland area. One in mid January called Jack’s Frosty Ball, one in mid February called Jack’s Broken Heart’s Club Cross, one in mid March called Jack’s Lucky Crank, and finally in mid April called Jack’s Spring Fling SSCX.
All four races would be apart of a playing card themed series. With each race the top finishers would receive a playing card in order of the card numbering Ace high and the best 4 card hand at the end would win the series. Poker rules would apply. So there would be a strategy to your racing in the series.
Just some random thoughts while looking at the rain.
Jeremy
PS the names are there to inspire some graphically inclined people.
